Tight muscles are now the bane of my life, and I can imagine they are for anyone left with synkinesis or immobility from facial palsy. By the end of the day my eye, cheek, mouth and chin can get so tired and sore that I wanted something to help relax those muscles when I get home.

So I’ve been searching for facial massaging tools to try and help, but quite a few of them seem to be hundreds of pounds, and if you’re already spending money on physio and botox every few months it’s not always possible.

But I’ve been trying out all different types of tools that help relieve those tight muscles and found some that really WORK, so here are my top 5 picks for relieving those tight feelings, and they’re all under £20! (full disclaimer, I have found each of these products through my own research and haven't been endorsed to say any of the following, they're all 100% my own experiences with each product!)

1. Beurer Person Mini Massager - £14.99

This baby was my MUST HAVE when I was first sick. My boyfriend’s brother had Bell’s Palsy a few years back and told me he used one of these on his face everyday to help stimulate the muscles whilst he couldn’t move them.

Everyday I would use this on my cheek, forehead, chin and neck, and oh my word did it help! When I first saw my physio she said that whatever I was doing before I started seeing her had definitely helped with regaining my movement, even if it was just 5 or 10 minutes each day I would make sure I used it, it didn’t leave my side for months so definitely one of my favourite tools, especially for those early months of paralysis!

2. Jade Gua Sha - £15.00

This is a popular one for general facial toning at the moment, and it can be helpful for synkinesis symptoms as well! I use it mainly on my cheek muscles as it gets a good grip for a deep muscle stretch. Skin can get quite red during and after use but don’t worry! It’s actually also helping blood circulation and supporting lymphatic drainage, so it’s definitely a tool that can help both facial tone as well as tension.

3. Kitsch Blush Facial Ice Roller - £14.00

When I say this is heaven, I mean this is HEAVEN. I put it in the freezer beforehand for about half an hour and used it all over the side I had just stretched out. My skin felt instantly relieved and cooled and I couldn’t stop using it all over my face and neck it just feels soooo good!

It’s designed to alleviate sore muscles, tension and headaches which for anyone with facial palsy is a must! It also calms redness and inflammation which for me happens after every evening physio session, so I now use as a follow up step to help calm it all down. I don’t see myself not using this everyday now!

4. Odacité Mon Ami Acupressure facial beauty tool - £17.00

This one I really like to use around my eye area as it’s a much smaller tool. It has the same principles as the ice roller as you place in the fridge before use, however you press the rounded end into the pressure points around your eyes and brows.

The cooling acupressure really did help relax my muscles and stop my eye from feeling so tired, it’s definitely something I’ll be using on days when this area needs a bit more care and attention.

5. White Jade Gua Sha - £6.50

Much like the flat gua sha above, this product helps promote good blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, but I wanted to try out the different shape with this face tool.

Rather than dragging it across my cheek I instead focus it in areas which are particularly painful and use circular motions to work deep into the muscle, the larger end on my cheek and the smaller end around my eye.

It’s a great little two in one tool and by far the cheapest that I’ve tried so definitely a great one to have on your bedside table.

I can quite happily say I’ll continue to use every single one of these tools, they each have their own benefits that cater to different issues when I need them, but I do have to say that the kitsch ice roller was my absolute favourite.

The way it just instantly calms my sore muscles and inflamed skin makes it a real must have for me, it retains it’s cold for much longer than I thought it would and the amount of skin and muscle benefits has me sold. Since using it everyday I’ve noticed my muscles feel much less tense, especially around my eye and my cheek which has been a real relief as I’m now coming up to needing another Botox treatment, so using this until then had already helped my face feel much more comfortable and relaxed. My absolute favourite tool!
